Astrology 101 - Sun, Moon and Rising

Astrology is fun right? We all know bunches about our sun signs, and it's fun to play around with the idea that ‘oooo, this person might be the perfect fit for me because they are a Leo.’ However, it isn’t that simple. There is so much more to astrology than we know. As we know, we all have more than one sign. Our sun, however, is typically the one you can identify with and discover easily, so let's start with that.

Our sun sign is usually our most well known sign within our chart. Often people base their beliefs on astrology solely on their sun sign and whether or not they align with it. However, our sun only tells us so much. The sun sign is one of three signs in your ‘Primal Triad’ of the zodiac. In easier terms think along the lines of the father, son, and holy spirit. The sun would be the father. The baseline of where your personality and ego come from- your ‘I am’ and ‘Why I do what I do’ placement. Now it’s easy to say “well now that's me, that's all I need to know.” However, it goes much deeper than that.

Similar to how we are complex beings, each sign within our zodiac chart and houses represent different aspects of our personalities in different circumstances. Our Sun is only the tip of the iceberg: it is how we view ourselves. But what it lacks to tell us is how we will react or respond under particular stressors, our goals, fortunes and misfortunes in particular aspects of our life.

That is where our Moon Sign comes in. The Moon sign would be considered the son in our father, son, and holy spirit metaphor. The Moon Sign is how we feel our emotions, and how we project our thoughts and feelings from within. More of a personal and internal look at who we are to say the least. If the father is the outward method, our son is the action and response. So our Sun Sign is how we project outwardly, and our Moon Sign is the means by which we feel, respond, and act upon our thoughts and feelings.

Now that's all of it right? Nope. We still have quite a few more to go, but for today we will finish out by completing our Primal Triad with our holy host of the equation - our Rising Sign. Our Rising Sign is our social personality. Or in other terms, who we become when we are in social situations and how we are perceived by those around us. Often when in social situations we can be more reserved or become the life of the party. This is usually somewhat different than we are when we are alone and that is thanks to our Rising sign. Being the holy spirit of the Primal Triad, our rising sign dictates the feelings we leave people with after being around and meeting us, or in other words the ‘spirit’ that can allow us to be heard, understood and connected with those around us.

To put it in more direct terms I’ll use myself as an example. I am a Sagittarius Sun, Virgo Moon, and Virgo Rising. As a result, I tend to view myself as a free spirit, am tempted by things such as travel, feeling free, and the pursuit of knowledge due to my Sagittarius Sun. However, my Virgo moon is how I process my experiences and emotions, which leads me to be very organized, strategic, and methodical in my decision making. I am perceived as a very put together, organized and collected person due to my Virgo Rising. Does that make more sense now?

Diving into the world of astrology can be a bit confusing. Yet, it is important to remember that if we are consistent, and take the time to understand all aspects of our being as opposed to just our Sun Sign, we can gather infinite knowledge about ourselves, values, and limiting beliefs.
